[The brunch session] Matcha Panna Cotta

Living in Melbourne for one and a half year properly can turn any girl into a brunch lover. I wasnt much into it cuz it's quite expensive here compared to other eating-out choices. At first, I didn't get why people pay more than $20 for a dish that cannot make you as full as a bowl of ramen does. But as long as I stay in the city of arts, I understand that brunch is not just about filling your empty stomach; it is more of "arts on the plate". So here it is, a new series called The Brunch Session, here's to the long live of the brunch culture in Australia.
Since it's a combination of breakfast and lunch, it should provide a well balance from 5 groups of food (dairy, fruit, grain, meats & poultry, veggies). I often get up late during holiday season so my first meals of those days would be at around 10:30, 11am. I feel not ready for meats and any oily thing at that time so I often go for the combination of dairy, fruit and grain.
The first dish of this series would reflect my first attempt to turn a simple matcha panna cotta into something more delicate, something more "Aussie brunch".

The MVP of this dish, of course, match panna cotta.
Ingredients (for 6 servings)
- 400ml of milk
- 200 ml of thickened cream
- 50g of sugar
- 10g of gelatin powder
- 4 tbs of water
- 2tbs of matcha powder
- 2tbs of hot water
Making
1. Pour milk, cream and sugar into a small pot and bring the mixture to boil
2. Mix matcha powder with hot water until it turn into paste
3. Mix gelatin powder with 4tbs of warm water
4. By that time, the mixture would probably starts to bubble lightly. Turn off the stove and stir well one more time.
5. Put gelatin mixture into the milk mixture and stir well.
6. Put matcha mixture in and stir well.
Let the mixture cool down and divide them into 6 ramekins (or glass or bowls, whatever u like. I used ramekins so that the panna cotta have nice shape when flipped onto the plate). Let them chill in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. I always make the night before having brunch.
In the picture above, I decorate the plate with mix berries sauce, mix berries, muesli, cotton candy and some edible rose petals. You can really play with your own dish, throw in some nuts, other fruits, other sauces. There's no fixed formula for arts, let your creativity does its job.
*For the mix berries sauce, I just boil frozen mix berries with sugar and water until it's reduced then let it chill in the fridge together with panna cotta. I find it's quite convenient to have a bottle of sauce like this in ur fridge cuz it goes with any dessert and sweet brunch.
That's it, super simple, but enough to invite some girl friends over and have a joyful brunch time together.
If you love brunch like me, please leave a comment below tell me what your favorite brunch menu is. If you try this recipe, please post a photo to your instagram and tag me [veronicaphm]. I would love to see your own creation of arts. See you guys next time with another dish <3
